Watch fish for surface breathing, lethargy or irritated gills. Measure pH morning and evening, then ammonia, nitrite and oxygen where possible. Inspect prefilters, pumps and inflows. Clear-looking water is not proof of safety.

- Suspend fine mesh over part of the pond without sealing gas exchange.
- Skim floating debris without stirring bottom sediment.
- Increase aeration and clean the mechanical prefilter, preserving biological media.
