Watch fish for surface breathing, lethargy or irritated gills. Measure pH morning and evening, then ammonia, nitrite and oxygen where possible. Inspect prefilters, pumps and inflows. Clear-looking water is not proof of safety.

  • Skim floating debris without stirring bottom sediment.
  • Increase aeration and clean the mechanical prefilter, preserving biological media.
  • Build a temporary contour wattle or diversion above the pond.

Read water tests as trends, not isolated numbers

One pH result says little on its own. Compare morning and evening because plants and algae naturally shift pond chemistry, and record temperature and fish behaviour at the same time. If pH rises after ash, do not dose acid blindly; remove the source, aerate, check alkalinity and seek advice. Ammonia and nitrite must be interpreted alongside temperature, pH and filter condition.
