Oleander: Planting, Pruning, Watering and Winter Care

Flowering oleander in a Mediterranean garden path

Short answer. Plant oleander in full sun, in spring outside mild climates. Water containers regularly, prune lightly after flowering and protect from frost. The whole plant is toxic.

Oleander brings a holiday terrace into bloom, but it needs more water than lavender and less pruning than many gardeners think. In containers, root volume is everything.

In hot gardens, align its care with our summer watering guidance.

The Chatelain Method

Observe exposure and root volume, diagnose frost risk, correct with a large pot or drained soil, then prevent thirst and cold damage.

Oleander calendar

Task When Key point
Plant April to June, or mild autumn Full sun, shelter from cold wind
Water Summer, especially pots Soak, then let drain
Prune After flowering or late winter Dead wood and light shortening
Overwinter Before hard frost Fleece, warm wall or bright shelter

Ground or container?

In mild climates, open ground produces the finest shrubs. Elsewhere, a large container is safer: drainage, rich but open compost, and no standing water. A small pot creates repeated drought stress.

Watering and flowers

A flowering oleander drinks more than a rock-garden plant. In summer, water thoroughly and let the surface dry. Dropping buds often mean water stress or cold, not simply lack of feed.

Prune with restraint

Avoid cutting the whole plant hard every year. Remove dead wood, shorten a few stems and keep an airy outline.

  • Wear gloves: sap is irritating and the plant is toxic.
  • Do not burn prunings or feed them to animals.
  • Clean tools after pruning.

Toxicity matters

All parts of oleander are toxic to people and animals. Choose its position carefully, away from young children, curious pets and eating areas.

FAQ

Does oleander need a lot of water?

Established plants in the ground need moderate water. Potted flowering oleanders need regular watering without standing water.

When should oleander be pruned?

After flowering in mild climates, or late winter before growth resumes in cooler areas.

Is oleander poisonous?

Yes. Every part is toxic; use gloves and keep prunings away from children, pets and livestock.
