Create a Garden Waterfall or Stream

Create a Garden Waterfall or Stream - Les Jardins d'un Chatelain

To create a garden waterfall or stream, you need a high point to feed from, a gentle gradient, a sealed liner (underlay plus EPDM), and a pump that lifts water from the reception pool back up to the start. The pump’s flow rate sets the strength of the water feature.

The Chatelain Method for moving water

You observe the terrain and the lowest point (reception pool); you diagnose the gradient and flow you want; you correct with a sealed liner and stone steps; you prevent leaks with raised edges on the banks. A good watercourse looks as though the land shaped it, not the other way round.

The parts of a good stream

  • A reception pool at the lowest point (water reserve plus pump).
  • A sealed liner: underlay plus EPDM, well overlapped up the banks.
  • Stone steps to create drops and the sound of moving water.
  • A pump sized to the flow rate and lift height you need.
  • A discreet pipe carrying water from the pump back to the top.

The Chatelain note. As a rule of thumb, measure the width of the waterfall in cm and multiply by roughly 1.5 to get the flow needed in litres per minute — a 10cm-wide fall needs around 900 litres per hour as a minimum for an even sheet of water. Too little, and it dribbles; too much, and it splashes everywhere.

Singing waterfall or quiet stream?

A waterfall with a marked drop makes a lively splash; a stream on a gentle slope murmurs quietly. The two are often combined. Moving water also oxygenates the pond and helps keep algae in check.

Choosing the right flow

Effect wanted Flow Watch for
Quiet stream Thin sheet of water Flat stones, gentle slope
Short waterfall Brief drop Stable reception pool
Pond oxygenation Steady movement Quiet return flow

Flow rate alone is not enough — head height matters too. As a guide, every 0.5m of lift roughly halves a pump’s effective output, so a modest 1m lift often needs a pump rated well above your target flow. For flows over roughly 2,000 litres per hour, use at least 32mm pipe to limit pressure loss.

FAQ

What pump do I need for a garden waterfall?

As a starting point, multiply the fall’s width in cm by about 1.5 to get litres per minute needed, then check the pump’s rated output at your actual lift height, not its maximum.

Is a waterfall noisy?

It depends on the drop: a marked step splashes audibly, a gentle slope murmurs. You can adjust the sound by rearranging the stones.

Do I need to drain the stream in winter?

Switch off the pump and store it somewhere frost-free; the liner bed can stay in place. Just make sure standing water cannot freeze around the pump itself.
